Conservation Diaries of Gifford Pinchot
Harold K. Steen, editor; foreword by Edgar B. Brannon Jr.
From 1889, when he was 24, until 1946, the year of his death, conservationist Gifford Pinchot kept a diary in which he recorded details of his daily activities and encounters. Although federal involvement during Pinchot’s time seems modest by today’s standards, it marked a huge shift in the role of government in conserving natural resources. What Pinchot and others were able to accomplish was actually quite extraordinary, and his diaries offer a unique window into the conservation movement as it evolved. 250 pages, softcover. Forest History Society and the Pinchot Institute for Conservation, 2001.
